How to Brush Your Pet's Teeth

How to Brush Your Pet's Teeth

Beginners should start by slowly introducing the pet to the feel and handling of a dental brushing session. Gently manipulate the face and lips for limited, brief sessions once per day during the first two or three days followed by lavish praise and a small treat. You can then graduate from this step by lifting the lips and running your finger along the gums and teeth.

Another two or three days later, introduce the toothbrush moistened with water. Using a slow, circular motion and holding the bristles at a 45-degree angle, begin by brushing the front teeth proceeded by the large upper and lower teeth. Calmly work your way to the back of the mouth. Generally, only the outside of animal's teeth needs to be brushed.

Once you and your pet have mastered this intermediate stage, add a small amount of veterinary toothpaste such as CET Enzymatic Toothpaste for dogs and cats (human toothpaste is not healthy for pets and can lead to upset stomachs). You may increase the dental brushing time by 30–45 seconds per side and do not need to rinse with water as humans do. Continue these short pet dental brushing sessions daily.
